Start-up of the Steel Melting Simulator at the United Metallurgical Company R&D Center (Vyksa, Russia)
United Metallurgical Company R&D Center (Vyksa, Russia) has launched testing and utilization of the Steel Melting (SM) simulator, which has been developed by Innovation Bureau of Metallurgical Technologies Co. (IBMT Co., Moscow, Russia). The SM simulator is software which includes a package of models developed, user friendly interface, and database of steel grades, scrap, ferroalloys, and slag-former materials. This simulator is intended for optimization of technology of steel primary melting and secondary treatment without trial melts.
The SM simulator gives a possibility to simulate and predict reactions of steel-melting process to any variations of the melt conditions, operating regimes, scrap and other materials quality.
The following tasks may be solved with SM simulator: enhancement of current steel-making technology; augmentation of individual unit process productivity; rise of overall effectiveness of primary melting and secondary treatment plants.
Moreover the SM simulator allows to increase effectiveness of development of new technologies in the following cases: new steel grades implementation, utilization of new sort of ferroalloys or slag-former materials, changing of other production conditions.
The SM simulator has been based on strict deterministic models. It has allowed to create a universal instrument which is able to simulate any steel-making processes: primary melting in Electric Arc Furnaces and in Basic Oxygen Furnaces, as well as secondary treatment in Ladle Furnaces and in Vacuum Degassers, etc.
The SM simulator is stand-alone software and it may be installed to a PC. The SM simulator is the simplest device of IBMT systems offered: Processes Control Systems and Production Control Integrated Systems.
About IBMT Co.
Primary activity:
- Automation of steelmaking technological processes: primary melting, secondary steel-making, production planning, and coordination of steelmaking units’ work.
- Technological consulting on optimization and modernization of metallurgical processes.
The thermodynamic models developed in IBMT have allowed to realize classical principles of construction of control system in practice. The mathematical formalized knowledge of character of processes in steel-melting units is a basis of the models. All it allows to tell about creation of control systems of new generation – the systems based on scientific knowledge (Science-Based Systems).
Use of thermodynamic accounts had appeared productive not only at construction of control systems for separate units, but also for all chain of units and sectors and had allowed to realize a principle of production management of steel “from technology”, which provides a support for administrative decisions by design and control of production process.
The IBMT Co. steel-melting control systems (named GIBBS® control systems) carry out many new functions; they have high adaptability, adequacy of decisions and reliability.
